February, March & April Club Up-date of Activities to Get Ready for the Summer of 2022. (Telescope practice & Program development, Etc.)
FEBRUARY , MARCH & APRIL STARGAZER UP-DATE FROM JOAN 2-20-2022
It certainly has been a snowy winter, but our drought needs every possible flake. We are canceling the February 25th Star Party due to the snow on the ground & the new snow expected the week of February 20th.
March, we hope will be different, with 3 Star Parties planned for Fridays: the 4th, 11th & 25th & one on April 1st. Some of those dates must be successful. Even having a small group of people will get us going on using the 4 CRIA telescopes & other preparations for this summer.
On each night we will start around 4PM while it is still light enough to get the scopes set up. There will be hors d’oeuvre served as folks arrive. As it is getting dark we will be eating Stouffer’s Lasagne & salad. Then we will be using our scopes until we get tired.
All this will be at the home of Bob & Bernadette Sikes. They are easy to find, one block off Hwy #160. (I don’t want to put their address on the web-site.) If you need help, or want to R.S.V.P., Bernadette’s number is 720-626-9304. Please park on the road or at the beginning of the driveway. Telescopes will be set up closer to the house.
The club will be providing the Lasagne & salad, but I am asking you to bring a simple appetizer, drink or dessert for snacking. If you can’t bring something, just come anyway. None of us will starve!
OTHER THINGS TAKING PLACE IN APRIL: April 29th & 30th is CRIA (Chimney Rock Interpretive Association) Annual Training. On Friday, it will be at the Tennyson Center from about 9 AM-3:30 PM, a nice lunch is included. On Saturday there will be a Special Private Tour at the site from 9 AM to noon, followed by a small lunch.
Here is the situation that you should note: If a stargazer volunteers at Chimney Rock, you are considered a CHIMNEY ROCK Special Astronomy VOLUNTEER. Other Chimney Rock Volunteers must attend this training & take 1st Aid & CPR classes (the cost is covered by CRIA.) We get a break because of knowing astronomy & telescopes. But, the more we know about Chimney Rock & safety, the better. We also are welcome at any CRIA activity without having to pay, but being willing to help, if needed. It is all part of a group effort. I hope many of you will attend the training R.S.V.P. at the CRIA office =970-731-7133. Also call that # if you will take 1st aid & CPR.
FYI: There is one 2022 calendar left. If some one wants it at a reduced price, let Joan know.(303-995-2888) Or if you ordered it & didn’t pick it up, tell Joan before it is gone.
I will be giving everyone a 2022 Summer Schedule. There will be a lot happening. I expect that not everyone can attend everything, but please do your part to be an active member of the club and remember that the more you put into something, the more you will learn & get out of it.
I also have an up-dated list of members with phone numbers & e-mail addresses. All names & addresses have been sent to the Astronomical League so everyone should be getting the REFLECTOR MAGAZINE. IF YOU HAVE NOT GOTTEN IT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P. so I can fix it.
There are some members who have not paid their dues for 2021-2022. Dues are NOT for a calendar year but run from July 2021 to June 2022. It is confusing, but how the Astronomical League wants it. It is only $25 for both San Juan Star Gazers & the National Astronomical League including Reflector Magazine. Money 1st goes to the League & for REFLECTOR. The more money we have as a club, the more we can do for our members. THANK YOU!
IF YOU HAVE ANY NEW IDEAS, CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENTS, PLEASE LET JOAN OR JERRY KNOW. WE NEED TO GET A BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO HELP. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL VOLUNTEER. You are needed!!!
